THE JOURNEY SO FAR
4.1 In carrying out the board's statutory responsibilities as set out in the enabling
Decree (No. 33 or 1989), the Board conducts the Universities Matriculation
Examination (UME) and the Monotechnic Polytechnics and Colleges of Education
Matriculation Examination (MPCE) for placement in the respective institutions.
4.1.1 Between 1977 and 1986, the first nine (9) years of the existence of the board,
test papers were produced abroad. However, for subsequent conduct of the
Board's examinations, Government directed that the joint Admissions and
Matriculation Board's examinations and processing operations should be
localised.
In 1987, the board performed the exemplary feat of printing examination
materials in Nigeria. Since then, the Board's question papers have always been
produced and answer scripts processed in the country.
Apart from conferring greater autonomy on the Board in the area of
preparation and conduct of its examinations, this feat has gone a long way in
conserving scarce foreign exchange resources for the country. This indeed, is
no mean economic achievement and has enhanced national pride in the
operations of the Board.
